Multi-strand wire solves a specific problem: the need for very low stiffness without giving up strength. Several fine strands share the deflection, so the arch delivers a light, continuous force over a wide range while remaining resistant to permanent deformation.
The range covers both families. Twist wire is made by twisting strands together; flex wire is braided, which gives an even smoother force curve. Both are supplied as straight lengths in protective tubes and as preformed archwires.
Preformed versions come in round sections and in rectangular sections built from either three or eight wires, so the clinician can move from initial alignment into a rectangular slot without changing the mechanics of force delivery.
